Fat Thursday is one of the sweetest holidays in the Polish calendar – a day when you can reach for your favorite pastries without remorse. Where did this tradition come from? Why do we celebrate on Thursday? And do you really have to eat something sweet on this day to ensure prosperity?
The origins of the custom date back to ancient Rome, where feasts in honor of the arrival of spring were full of fatty foods and bread pastries, which over time turned into sweet treats. In Poland, the holiday appeared in the Middle Ages and initially was mainly associated with eating meat dishes. It was not until the 16th-17th centuries that sweet, stuffed specialties began to reign on the tables, which we know today.
Currently, it is a holiday for all lovers of doughnuts, with marmalade and powdered sugar, with rose jam, chocolate, pudding, with and without icing. According to tradition, eating a doughnut, cheese doughnut or faworki on Fat Thursday guarantees prosperity for the whole year!
Celebrating on Thursday results from the liturgical division of the week – in Anglo-Saxon countries and some regions of Europe, the equivalent is “Fat Tuesday” (Mardi Gras). Whatever the name, the idea remains the same: enjoy the sweet tooth before it’s time to fast!
