Second edition of Geek Academy. Learn programming from scratch

The Sii company, second year in a row, organizes free, innovative, educational program, the Geek Academy, which is addressed to people who want to start their career in IT. This summer, a group of 25 enthusiasts of new technologies will learn how to program. An idea for summer days? Intensive, coding training from scratch with the Geek Academy. The organizers of the Academy provide a large dose of practical knowledge from experienced programmers, testers and system architects.

For the most of participants – the Geek Academy is a pass to a professional career as programmers or testers – what is confirmed by lots of students of the Academy’s first edition. Participation in the program declared people who previously had no professional experience, but for a long time were passionate about the new technologies. Each participant has an interesting story or different reasons causing the decision to change their career paths. The Geek Academy participated, among others, a lawyer, a beautician, a builder, or a chemist. Some of them even quit their job or decided on night shifts, to be able to participate in daily activities.

Was it worth it? Alicja Sawicka, Head of Recruitment and HR answers this question – Definitely yes. In the previous edition of the Geek Academy, during just one month, we were able to enter the labor market for more than 20 people ready to power the Tri-City’s IT companies ranks, 14 of them received work in the Sii. We have developed a substantial program that responds to the needs of business and is primarily practical. Based on the best developed practices during the first edition – I am convinced that this year we will also be very successful.

Paweł Czapiewski – called the rector of the Geek Academy and professionally connected with Sii as a Senior Software Engineer brings the content with which the participants of the upcoming edition will have to deal – Our students will learn the methodologies of software development, will master new languages: Python and C#, as well as gain a general knowledge of software’s quality assurance. From the very beginning we teach the teamwork in the spirit of Agile. The Geek Academy is an opportunity to gain valuable qualifications for the labor market and to develop technical competence.

The second edition of the Geek Academy starts on August 1st and will last a month. Classes will be held five times a week for 7 hours each day from Monday to Friday, in the largest in the Tri-City, prestigious complex of the Olivia Business Centre. Class with full technical equipment will be located directly in the Sii office. To join the Academy apply by sending your CV to geekacademy@pl.sii.eu up to 9 July 2016. Selection of candidates is based on the interview and the test section. The organizer of the Geek Academy is the second largest IT employer in Pomerania – the Sii company, which in the Tri-City employs nearly 700 engineers. For the second time partner of the project is Olivia Business Centre.

Opening of Talent Development Centre

The Poviat Job Centre in Gdańsk opens a new organisational unit called the Talent Development Centre. This modernly equipped place providing the services in the area of counselling and coaching is located in the Olivia Business Centre. It is the first centre in Poland that renders the services in the scope of talent diagnosis. For the Job Centre, it will also be the first centre whose services can be used by the residents of the whole city.

DSC_3188The TDC will operate three dedicated areas: the Career Academy (for the residents, including the employed), the Personal Development Zone (for those registered with the Poviat Job Centre in Gdańsk), and the Youth Talent Land (dedicated to pupils/students, parents and teachers). One of the main tasks of the TDC is the cooperation with the education sector, that is with primary schools, gymnasiums, post-gymnasium schools and higher education institutions.

‘It is no coincidence that the Talent Development Centre that is of key importance for the activities undertaken by our Job Centre is opened at the Olivia Business Centre that attracts dozens of new employers. During our talks held with the companies located there, it turned out that even the best recruitment procedure is not enough if there are no suitable candidates. The number of people who do not work in accordance with their predispositions and professional qualifications is still too large. And on the other hand, there is a huge group of employers who are confronted with the problem of finding suitable employees. The aim of the Talent Development Centre is to effectively bridge this gap in the labour market’, explains Roland Budnik, the Head of the Poviat Job Centre in Gdańsk.

DSC_3148As many as 12 specialists in HR and career counselling will work in modernly equipped rooms of the Talent Development Centre. Their task is to provide comprehensive support to the residents of Gdańsk in the scope of broadly interpreted career counselling and career pursuit through a number of innovative tools such as assessment centre, career coaching and crisis coaching, as well as relationship counselling or Gallup talent assessment tests. The advise given by the specialists should provide the beneficiaries of the activities held in the Centre with the knowledge concerning the methods of better self-presentation during meetings with prospective employers, as well as with different ways of looking at the job-seeking process and professional self-promotion. This is the place where one can take part in the workshops aimed at self-discovery and creative thinking, as well as become convinced about the strength of modern training methods for team work.

In addition, the offer of the TDC also includes practical classes with experts – business trainers, people working in marketing or recruitment sectors, make-up artists or specialists in new technologies. All classes and activities are carried out far from ‘official’ rooms, in modern interiors of the Centre of the area exceeding 500m2, equipped with special training multimedia rooms and networking space.

DSC_3267‘The activities of the recently opened Talent Development Centre are based mainly on the development of our clients’ strengths, their talents and innate abilities. We would like to show the residents of Gdańsk, as well as schools, that is teachers, pupils, students, parents, that the key to satisfactory job includes not only practical professional skills which are developed by our Job Centre during different specialist trainings, but also personal abilities and the identification of our potential’, adds Kariona Chamier-Ciemińska, the head of the TDC.

The offer of the TDC is available to all residents in the city. They can also benefit from the services of the Career Academy. The persons registered with the Poviat Job Centre in Gdańsk can contact counsellors from the Personal Development Zone. The appointments for the consultations in the Talent Development Centre can be made by telephone on 513 096 893, or the interested persons can use the appointment calendar application available at the website of the TDC at www.centrumtalentow.pl. The clients of the Job Centre can also arrange the appointment through their individual adviser. In September 2016, the offer of the TDC will also be expanded with the Youth Talent Land dedicated to students in vocational schools.

The Lewiatan Confederation invites: “Innovation – Financing – Development – Business Voice 2016”

For many Polish companies, conducting innovative activities is often not only a way to gain an advantage over the competition and gain a leading position, but also a necessary condition for staying on the market. That’s why more and more companies are innovating. In order to build a stable position of the company on the market and increase its value, it is necessary to introduce innovative technologies and expand sales markets, both in Poland and abroad. To do this, you need to invest, and this requires finding the right source of financing. Capital market institutions offer new opportunities in this area that you can take advantage of, and it is certainly worth knowing about them.

During the four-hour conference, to which we cordially invite you to participate, we will present ways to solve the above problem. We have prepared two substantively related thematic blocks:

  • morning – we will present three complementary financial instruments, including: a technological loan for innovative technologies under the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-2020 and other instruments for financing EU projects, we will offer the services of Business Angel/Business Angels funds to start-up companies. In this part of the conference, we have also planned the participation of a representative of the management board of a well-known local company, who will share his experience in using one of the financial instruments proposed above;
  • Southern – we are planning three interactive workshops, during which the lecturers will discuss in detail the methods of financing investments presented in the morning block. All workshops will be of a practical nature and will include a presentation of selected regional case studies.

The conference is led by high-class experts and practitioners with many years of experience. The meeting is dedicated to entrepreneurs looking for various sources of financial support for planned investments.

The conference is organized in cooperation with our regional associations: the Pomeranian Employers’ Association Lewiatan and the Pomeranian Employers’ Association.
