We share passion. Ola from PwC: everyone has something to give to others

One is not the end of the world…

Everyone has something to give to others. Sharing knowledge, time and a helping hand. Changing the lives of orphaned children, who were deprived of many opportunities by fate from the very beginning. The measure of humanity is the extent of the care we offer to other people – says Aleksandra Bykowska, who created and coordinates employee volunteering at PwC, which consists of tutoring in an orphanage.

How to encourage colleagues to volunteer as employees?

Very easy, but it requires getting ahead of the curve and presenting a proposal for action. Shortly after I joined the company, I saw one of the thanks to PwC for their participation and involvement in the social campaign. At that time, we were called the Centre of Excellence, so I decided to persuade such wonderful people to do something good, share their knowledge and take on a completely different role than the one I play every day.

Are we talking about a new role for the teacher?

Tutor. I thought about English classes – this language is an everyday part of our company, so there is no shortage of candidates who could support. I started with myself, setting an example that you can act regularly by working for measurable results.

How to create such a team?

Initially, I was a bit hesitant about the subject and I was very surprised by the number of people who wanted to help with me. Our volunteers turned out to be very independent and systematic, their work does not require excessive coordination.

Who are you helping?

Children and young people from a local children’s home. For a number of reasons, this is a challenging environment that has raised some concerns among volunteers. It’s not like kids are going to “buy” everything. The most important thing is to avoid comparisons – to children and adolescents we know and to ourselves from our school years.

Why is it so important?

The lack of parents and everyday life in the orphanage make these children perceive the world in a slightly different way. From an early age, they are put to a great test, so our task is to skillfully adjust the bar and set rational expectations. The key to hearts is a kind of ease – it allows you to change the atmosphere, and children feel much more comfortable thanks to it. Believe me, then the effects are satisfactory for both parties, which is very important in charity work.

How did the children react to the idea of extra lessons?

I had the pleasure of getting to know most of our charges in various facilities and I can see that they welcomed the volunteers extremely well. A somewhat friendly relationship was born, but also a mentoring one. A volunteer has become an example of an adult who is completely different from an educator who requires order, or a person from the environment of the past. In fact, he becomes an older friend who inspires and at the same time can show that some things are really worth doing.

Tutoring that changes the world?

No exaggeration (laughs). Relationships that allow for development are the greatest reward for us tutors. An example is a boy who, inspired by his work with a volunteer, applied to high school, postponing the idea of a vocational school. The tutor turned out to be someone important to him, he felt that he had her support, he consulted with her on future decisions about the choice of a field of study.

Can your activity be described as a program?

Employee volunteering is first and foremost a willingness to help in itself. Each participant signs an individual contract with the children’s home. PwC supports us by granting us three hours of work per month, which we can devote to our children. It allows us to leave work early, thanks to which we can get to class on time, provides help in the form of stationery and materials needed for lessons. However, please keep in mind that material things are not the most important need here.

What is it?

Our attention, which we focus entirely on the people in our care. I’ve noticed that even if an adult demands and forces them to do extra work, students are happy about it, they even look forward to these classes. It’s amazing to see the joy at our sight! The greetings of a group of younger children are very energetic (laughs)!

Doesn’t the burden of responsibility oppress you?

None of us even try to take on the role of educator. We understand that we shape these children in the educational aspect, so we want to show them the possibilities and give them courage, convincing them that it is worth fighting for their dreams. From the beginning, we avoid close personal relationships, which could turn out to be harmful if one of us had to give up this job.

Is this the kind of distance you have to learn?

The volunteers working in the program care a lot about their students. However, it doesn’t go beyond the relationships we’ve agreed on. I often receive e-mails with information about crises, which usually turn into success after some time. Every one is a cause for concern. When the revision succeeds in a four, the student and the tutor grow with pride (laughs).

Only English?

From this year onwards, also mathematics. It turned out that support was urgently needed.

How many groups do you help?

About 25 students benefit from tutoring. The group of volunteers is always constant, with 15 people involved. We are very happy to ask how you can join us. A list of willing teachers has already been created for the next year, so the kids will receive strong support.

Have you adopted a fixed formula of meetings?

It all depends on your needs. It happens that a volunteer leads a group, as long as it is in the same group. There are individual classes.

Employee volunteering is already 2 years old, what are your plans for the future?

I think that our cooperation with the Gdańsk Integration Children’s Home is so durable and fruitful that both parties want to continue it. The facility has 4 branches in different locations where its pupils live. It is important that we focus on developing this cooperation. Of course, we are open to supporting other orphanages. I try to check if there are any additional needs.

Is there satisfaction?

The greatest satisfaction is when you see real progress – sometimes you notice it yourself, sometimes you find out about a passed exam or a higher grade at the end of the year. Also, when after the first year of the program, the facility expressed its willingness to continue working with us, I realized that we really did a great job. I was surprised, because I didn’t have a chance to look at the project from this point of view – I spent my time helping the kids, even three times a week, taking replacements in case of volunteers’ indisposition, so that our students would not lose valuable lessons. The expressions of gratitude that we received from the management and educators were very nice and encouraging, but the total surprise was the fact that the campaign was distinguished in the report of the Responsible Business Forum. Being an example of employee volunteering for companies is a great distinction and even greater motivation to act.

SEE YOU!

Such was our amazing Children’s Day at Sportowo!

This is what our amazing and energetic Children’s Day looked like. We have known for a long time that #razemmozemywiecej, so on June 1st, together with our closest neighbors – Primary School No. 35 with sports classes in Gdańsk Oliwa and Gdańsk Sports Club “Stoczniowiec” – we invited kids to participate in… Olympics. We would like to thank our wonderful Partners who put a lot of heart and energy into Children’s Day. We would also like to thank all our guests, without whom it would not be so fantastic. There’s nothing like Neighbors! A big round of applause goes to the host, who was the Olympic champion, Mateusz Kusznierewicz!

On 1 June, the Gdańsk Shipyard Sports Club, Primary School No. 35 with sports departments and Olivia Business Centre invited the youngest to participate in numerous sports competitions, which are usually held during the Olympic Games. The competition had a unique character, because its goal was great family fun, this time with the active participation of well-known and titled athletes from the Tri-City.

Young participants had the opportunity to try their hand at football and badminton pitches, find out that athletics and roller hockey are as exciting as cycling, rugby, gymnastics, rowing and sailing.

We met m.in. badminton star Kamila Augustyn , a participant of the Olympic Games in Beijing and London, who faced the daredevils of precise darts shots. Adrianna Dadci-Smoliniec, an Olympian from Athens, European Champion and multimedalist of the Polish Championships, convinced the participants that judo is fun. There was also a symbolic boxing ring, with Marcin ” Express” Marczak , a professional boxer, organizer of popular boxing galas. There’s something for everyone, so when you were bored with shadow fighting, it was best to try spectacular free exercises, jumps and balance elements under the supervision of experienced coaches and competitors MKS Gdansk. Fans of two wheels were waiting for RowerOver Association, which, in addition to insane attractions, prepared an obstacle course and a workshop on how to move safely in road traffic.

The strength of the teams was demonstrated by the basketball and futsal teams of AZS University of Gdańsk, Rugby Club Lechia Gdańsk, Biało-Zielone Ladies Gdańsk and School No. 35 , which for years has been referred to as a forge of talents in handball, figure skating and ice hockey. It is here, at the Gdańsk Shipyard ice rink in the Olivia Hall, that many world sports stars started their careers, with whom we will also meet on 1 June.

Importantly, well-known and well-liked players took up the challenge of presenting themselves in a slightly different role without fear. This allowed the participants to meet their idols, take part in competitions led by them, as well as give a high five and take a photo together.

– Children’s Day at Sportowo in Oliwa was an opportunity to meet, among others, the GKS Stoczniowiec Gdańsk senior team in ice hockey. The girls have won five medals at the Polish Championships, won year after year. Next to them, there were promising juniors, who, under the leadership of captain Krystian Mocarski , won the silver medal in the national championship. Igor Smal, a representative in the U20 category, also played with us. We also met Adrian Wielgat , multiple Polish Champion, participant of the European Championships, World Championships, World Cup, Olympian from Pyongchang, as well as Marcin Bachanek , multi-medalist of the Senior Polish Championships, participant of the World Cup, vice-champion of the globe in the World Academic Championships – says Maciej Turnowiecki, Sports Director of GKS Stoczniowiec.

That was the beginning of a championship team! Rafał Grycner, junior Polish Vice-Champion in all-around and National Champion at a distance of 1000 meters, and Justyna Plutowska and Jeremie Flemin, described as an export dance couple, argued how to win. Polish vice-champions in figure skating, participants of the European Championships flew straight from Montreal, where they train for most of the season. There was also a talented graduate of School 35, Amelia Rams, who at the beginning of her career can boast medals from the Youth Olympics and this year’s gold from the Youth National Championships.

One of the main accents of Children’s Day was an intergenerational hockey game. Although the game did not take place on ice, there was no shortage of emotions, as it is in hockey. The white-and-blue team was led by Katarzyna Kasprzycka, bronze medalist of the World Championships in China.

The children were reminded that summer is approaching by water sports enthusiasts from the Gdańsk Sailing Club, specializing in windsurfing and Optimists. The importance of daily activity was explained by instructors from CityFit, who conducted open fitness classes and competition on rowing ergometers. The referee in the duel was Cezary Mrozowicz, a medalist of the World Championships in the lightweight eight.

The little ones were cheered on by unique mascots. The Gdańsk Zoo has taken care of such a surprise for the youngest. There were not only frolics together, but also an opportunity to “high-five” a llama and a giraffe, compete in a race with a kangaroo, or take a photo with the lion king.

How to extinguish a fire in the throat, whether we have a lemon in our stomach and how a bee sees could be found out in the zone BayLab – Bayer Better Life, from which, in a split second, we were able to move to a world full of adventure in virtual reality, being inside the human body, or hovering like a bee flying over a meadow.

Such a fantastic Children’s Day in Oliwa could not take place without the inflatables loved by the little ones and delicious ice cream, which always tastes special on June 1st!

There was also something for mothers, grandmothers, aunts… The Women’s Zone offered something for the spirit and something for the body. Interesting mini-lectures by experts, beauty consultations, and jewellery making workshops awaited the ladies. There was a sweet treat and soft sofas and cushions to rest… All you had to do was bring a good mood and an open mind. It was possible to listen to specialists (m.in) while making a beautiful bracelet. advocate of Anna Bober-Koytarbińska and Agnieszka Baranowska, ambassador of the Regional Club of Woman and Money), and in the so-called In the meantime, nibble on something sweet! We were partnered in the Women’s Zone:
Dream Workshop Café Club; Jeweler Kardamo and NowystylGroup.com 🙂

Children’s Day in Olivia was held under the Honorary Patronage of the Mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz.

Special thanks go to our Resident, Arrow Polska, which decided to become the official partner of the event.

THANK YOU!

HRBP Club in Olivia: about cultural diversity

The meeting of the HRBP Club, operating at Olivia Business Centre, is behind us. Together with the Provincial Labour Office in Gdańsk and with the participation of the Deputy Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Ryszard Świlski – who this time acted as a manager of several thousand employees from a non-business industry – we talked about cultural diversity, which is becoming an everyday reality for employers.

– The club’s philosophy is based on the need to integrate the HR environment in the Tri-City, create a common platform and improve competences. Currently, there are over 150 specialists from Tri-City companies in it. During each meeting, we provide inspiring knowledge and give an example of good HR practice from a specific company –Says Małgorzata Gwozdz, HR Club Chairwoman, HR Director at Olivia.

Participants learned about Hofstede’s research on: between organisational culture and national culture. The experience of working abroad – the differences and similarities of the labour market – was discussed by managers who have fulfilled their careers in other markets.

The next meeting, in June, will be a summary of the year of the HRBP Club’s activity. We invite you today.

We are partnered by HR Solutions Group, Training Designers, Business Centre Club – Gdańsk Lodge.

Sail with us to Bornholm!

Olivia Sports organizes a cruise to Bornholm. Sail with us! The cruise is for everyone:) For those who are just starting their adventure with the sea and for seasoned seasoned travelers. For young and a little older. For the brave and shy. For those who have a storm jacket and those who are just planning to buy it;) Take a friend, an acquaintance, a mom, an uncle, a sister, Bart. Catch the wind in your sails with us!

Therefore… If you are wondering if you can sail with us, don’t hesitate!

We take on board all those who want to actively relax on a sea cruise. You don’t need to have any qualifications or sailing experience. The cruise will be led by an experienced captain who will take care of all technical aspects and safety of the participants. It’s going to be special!:)

Cruise dates:

27.07 – 02.08.2019 (Saturday-Friday)

Set course for Bornholm and Christianso with us

Ahead of us are the Danish islands, where we will taste freshly smoked fish and visit m.in. The center of the Middle Ages, Hammershus Fortress, high cliffs and sandy beaches. Then we will head towards Karlskrona – a port located in the heart of the Swedish archipelago. There are many attractions waiting for us there: the Kungsholms fortress, the old shipyard Gamla Varvet, the Naval Museum with exhibits of ships, as well as a kind of symbol of Sweden – the island of Brändaholm with 43 red houses.

So what’s our plan?

First of all, we relax and have a great time. People who want to develop their sailing skills will be able to take part in driving a yacht, planning a route or reading flights. In navigation, we will use paper maps, but also modern electronics, autopilot and other installations offered by the yacht.

Suggested route:

Gdynia – Bornholm – Öland – Karlskrona – Gdynia

The final shape of the route will be discussed with the helmsman on the day of the start of the cruise based on weather forecasts and crew preferences.

Cruise price:

1390 PLN.

The price includes:

  • a place on a yacht with full equipment,
  • care of an experienced skipper,
  • training in sailing, flight, navigation lights, operation of yacht installations, navigation instruments, VHF radio.

Additional charges on site:

  • On-board ticket office (about 200-300 PLN per person) – the crew contributes to common expenses: food (including skipper), fuel, parking fees. Unspent money is returned to the participants at the end of the cruise.

Our yacht

Bavaria 37 – comfortable yacht for 8 people (7 participants + skipper)

We sail on a new model of a yacht from the renowned German brand Bavaria. Yachts of this manufacturer are very popular among shipowners and customers all over Europe. They are characterized by user-friendliness, easy handling, safety, great space layout and comfort.

  • 8 berths
  • length 11.30 m
  • width: 3.67 m
  • draught 1.95 m
  • 28 hp engine
  • fuel tank 150 l
  • number of cabins – 3 (available for cruise participants, the skipper sleeps in the mess hall) water tank 210 l
  • 1 bathroom

Bornholm

It is not for nothing that Bornholm is called a paradise for cyclists. 235 kilometers of bicycle paths, marked out away from traffic, will satisfy even the most demanding amateurs of this sport. There are plenty of attractions to see and visit along the way: the NaturBornholm Natural History Museum with interesting interactive exhibitions, the Joboland water park, the Middle Ages Centre, as well as art glass factories and herring smokehouses. It is also worth stopping to try the famous sweets from the small winery in Snogebaek and Svaneke.

Karlskrona

A city in the heart of the archipelago, it captivates with its peaceful climate. The center itself is located on an island 6 km away from the mainland! You can relax after the cruise in an atmospheric café or go to visit several interesting places: the War Museum in Karlskrona – there are real full-size warships, XVI figureheads, unique models and an underwater tunnel where you can admire the wreck of a sailing ship at the bottom of the sea. Right next to the city centre is the small island of Bränd, where there are 43 red houses. You can also visit the Kungsholms Fort, which defended the gates of Karlskrona for over 300 years. Exotic plants have been brought here over the years on board many ships returning from long voyages, now they flourish protected by the fortress walls. The old shipyard Gamla Varvet is now one of Karlskrona’s biggest tourist attractions. It is also the most important World Heritage Site in Karlskrona. In the shipyard there is, for example, a 300-metre-high building from 1692, in which ropes were tied, the longest wooden building in Sweden and the first dry dock, the so-called “Dry Dock”. “Polhemsdockan”, built between 1716 and 1724, was then referred to as the eighth wonder of the world.

The Grand Final of the Olivia Business Centre Football League

The third championship in history was won by the Dream Team Indestructibles Energa, who after a thrilling finale disillusioned the defending champion team City Fit. The third place was won by the players of the Lechia Gdańsk Foundation. As they announce, they haven’t said their last word yet!

It’s going to be a well-deserved holiday. The fight for supremacy in the 9th edition of the Olivia Business Centre Football League was very fierce! Throughout the season, the players have proven that passion gives wings. According to the fans, a professional would not be ashamed of the technically scored goals and actions conducted, so the hopes related to the next season are growing. Both for the players and the fans, who are increasingly supporting the rival teams.

The ball is round and there are two goals!

First, in the match for the third place, last year’s finalists – Lechia Gdańsk Foundation, defeated thyssenkrupp 7:5. There is power in this team, because for the second time in the knockout stage, Lechista managed to make up for a two-goal loss after the break to finally win the game.

There is a slight dissatisfaction, last year we were in the final, and even this year we were close to it – said the captain of FLG, Kamil Kosior, after the match.

Finally, the time has come for the “Grande Finale” of the season, in which the defending champions CityFit and the Dream Team Indestructibles Energa competed. After an extremely exciting match, DTN Energa won 5:3, causing a surprise and winning the third championship title in its history.

It was a very difficult match. If it had lasted a few minutes longer, there could have been a draw and a penalty shootout and the excitement would have been even greater. We’ve been playing in the league since the first season, with pretty much the same squad. We had just won the first competition before and we also won the cup in 2014 – said the captain of DTN Energa, Bogusław Kowalski, after the match.

Congratulations to the opponents. It was a close competition, but we can lose. Unfortunately, it was not possible to defend the title. We hope for a rematch next year – summed up the finals Mateusz Szkoda from CityFit.

Cups, confetti and Special Guest

The setting of the final had to be up to the season. To the surprise of the competitors and fans, the decoration ceremony was broadcast live by Radio Eska. The listeners of the most popular Eska Summer City show could see how much “Olivian” shares a common passion.

That’s what it was all about, because there is not enough applause to reward the players for an excellent season. The three best teams received medals, which were presented by Agnieszka Zglinicka, Director of Resident Relations at Olivia Business Centre, together with Wojciech Walania, Plenipotentiary of the Company’s Management Board.

After a truly masterful decoration, during which there was even confetti, it was time for awards. For the second time in a row, the top scorer was Marek Przybyłek from CityFit, and the most assists were recorded by Bartek Fila from HK Finance. Once again, the fair play award was given to DTN Energa goalkeeper Kamil Bieniewicz from the hands of the Special Guest. A well-deserved trophy was presented to the surprised Kamil by Zuzanna Myszka, who in place of her husband Piotr made this special honour for every athlete. The Energy Goalkeeper finished the competition with a T-shirt signed by the windsurfing world champion and an invitation to a joint training on the water.

– The Fair Play Award turned out to be the most exciting moment of the decoration. Kamil Bieniewicz did not hide his emotions and, as emphasized not only by his teammates, it was him who fully deserved this award. Throughout the season, he was remembered as an honest player who was able to point out the wrong decisions to the referees, even those that could have had a negative impact on his team. explains Dagmara Rybicka, Communication Manager at Olivia Business Centre.

Watch the video report:

The last and probably the most awaited moment was the presentation of the Cup to the winners. They, as befits the best, showed their class by performing the anthem of the Indestructibles Energa as much as they could!

This edition has a special sporting history. 17 teams took part in the competition, and the fans had the opportunity to applaud more than 200 players who, according to the fans, gave it their all. 144 games were played, which took up 7200 minutes of play. There were 1607 goals scored by licensed football referees, who were “headed” by Kamil Kalinowski.

Now it’s time to take a breath and get a well-deserved rest. We are about to make the 10th jubilee decision, which we will start in September. We already know that the best will win!
