Another “Star Speaker” – Correspondence from discovering the world during the transition

The next guest of the “Star Speaker” series will be John Borrell, a New Zealand journalist and businessman, settled in Kashubia.

As a journalist he travelled all over the world, and as a war correspondent he met Ryszard Kapuściński. From him he heard about Poland. Now he runs a guesthouse with his wife near Kartuzy, and has also founded a local newspaper and a vineyard. The guest of the next edition of the Star Speaker series – John Borrell – has an extremely colorful biography, which can be compared to the pages of history from Ernest Hemingway’s novels. He devoted most of his life to his passion for journalism: he was a war correspondent for 25 years: he watched the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, he covered the Round Stou deliberations, he was at the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was the first foreign correspondent to interview Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki. During the meetings, he will present these extremely colorful stories from the past era, in which he participated and described to the readers of “Time” magazine, and he will also talk about his current activity in building the local community and developing his business – which is his guesthouse “Kania Lodge”, in Sytna Góra near Kartuzy.

The Star Speaker series is a cyclical programme of inspiring lectures with international guests, carried out at Olivia Sky Club in cooperation with Gdańsk’s business, science, politics and media circles. The project is integrated with a series of lectures at Gdańsk universities, dedicated to the Tri-City student community. The aim of the project is to develop and integrate international business relations aimed at strengthening the position of Gdańsk in the global investment perspective.

John Borrell – journalist and businessman. A New Zealander born in New Plymouth, he is a former foreign correspondent for Time magazine, which covered wars in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, and later the fall of communism in Eastern Europe from 1989 to 1992. He has been living in Kashubia for 15 years and runs the “Kania Lodge” guesthouse in Sytna Góra near Kartuzy, which, according to the New York magazine “Wine Spectator”, has “one of the most unique restaurant wine lists in the world.” The hotel has its own vineyard, which John takes care of personally. John is also the owner of Wine Express – the first Polish mail-order house specializing in wines, founded 20 years ago and still thriving today. In addition, together with his eldest son William, he is a partner in the company Vestal Vodka dealing with the production of traditional vodkas from potatoes grown in Kashubia and other regions of Polish. In the UK and France, it has become a cult vodka – it can be found in the luxury department store “Harrods” and in the Claridges and Savoy hotels in London, as well as in the Ritz hotel in Paris. European Week of Sustainable Development: Carsharing, bicycles and a new intersection in Olivia Business Centre

The time and ease of getting to work is one of the most important things that determine employee satisfaction. Therefore, Olivia Business Centre is investing in further facilitation of access to office buildings in the business district in Gdańsk Oliwa. Infrastructure for cyclists and a car-sharing service are being developed. From 16 August, Olivia Business Centre can also be reached from Grunwaldzka Avenue via a new intersection.

It’s worth living in Oliwa

The Oliwa district of Gdańsk is very important for the economic development of the entire Tri-City. The Campus of the University of Gdansk, modern office buildings employing thousands of people, shopping malls and many newly built apartments are located here. The district is very well connected. Oliwa can be reached by SKM (Fast Urban Railway – an above-ground metro connecting the cities of the Tri-City agglomeration), PKM (Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway), tram or bus. If you are travelling by car, you will be able to use al. Grunwaldzka, the main thoroughfare of the Tri-City.

“Living in the city centre has many advantages. Such a location is particularly popular among young people who want easy access not only to work, but also to the cinema or shopping. Over the last year, the prices of flats in Oliwa alone have increased by an average of 2.5%. We expect that the upward trend will continue in the coming years, mainly due to the proximity to the expanding office centres and the Campus of the University of Gdańsk. Apartments in this area are often bought for investment purposes, i.e. for rent. This has been noticed by various developers who are building thousands of apartments in Oliwa and in the neighbouring districts – says property appraiser Krzysztof Płachta.Bikes

The area on which Olivia Business Centre is located is the best-connected plot in Oliwa. After all, comfortable access was one of the reasons why the famous Olivia Hall was built in this place. According to a report prepared for the British Council for Employees (BCO)[1] by the international consulting firm Savills, the time it takes to get to the place of employment has a great impact on employee satisfaction with their work. More than 50% of all people surveyed, including 65% of 25-34 year olds, cited the city centre as the best place to work.

Two or four wheels? Eco-friendly commuting

According to a report prepared for the British Council for Employees (BCO) by the international consulting firm Savills, the time it takes to get to the place of employment has a great impact on employee satisfaction with their job. More than 50% of all people surveyed, including 65% of 25-34 year olds, cited the city centre as the best place to work.

The advantage of working in the city centre is the short commute time to the office, which, according to a report for BCO, turned out to be the most important for as many as 86% of respondents. Therefore, the bicycle is increasingly chosen as a means of transport. This method is used by more and more people out of the total of several hundred thousand inhabitants of Oliwa and the surrounding districts: Wrzeszcz, Zaspa, Przymorze, Jelitkowo or Morena.

Being able to commute to work by bike is a great comfort. Traveling by bike means better health, saving money and often time. Cyclists benefit from an impressive and constantly expanding infrastructure in our centre. In Olivia Business Centre there are approx. 500 parking spaces for cyclists and 5 large changing rooms, each with showers. We also regularly increase the number of lockers and bicycle racks in underground car parks. For those who choose two wheels instead of four, there are surprises waiting for them, such as fresh apples in the locker room. However, this is not the end, as we are planning further actions in this area – says Wojciech Walania, President of the Management Board of Olivia Serwis, the company responsible for the management of Olivia Business Centre.

carsharing-in-obcCarsharing , on the other hand, is a short-term rental of passenger cars. This solution is attractive for people who use the vehicle occasionally. The car-sharing service in the centre is being introduced by Enspirion sp. z o.o. (ENERGA Group) together with Olivia Business Centre. All available cars will be eco-friendly electric cars. In August 2016, a two-day, publicly accessible test drive was held. The service is scheduled to be introduced later this year. What’s more, Olivia Business Centre is home to one of several electric car charging points in the Tri-City.

Shorter journey to Olivia Business Centre

In August 2016, a new intersection on Grunwaldzka Avenue was put into use. Two lanes lead directly towards Sopot and Gdynia.

This is another investment of Olivia Business Centre in the development of local infrastructure. In December 2014, we built a U-turn lane on al. Grunwaldzka Street in the direction of Wrzeszcz, which significantly improved communication in Oliwa by improving the flow of traffic at the intersection with ul. Derdowski. We want the traffic around Olivia Business Centre to run smoothly and safely. The new intersection will reduce the time it takes to get to and from the city centre – adds Wojciech Walania.

European Mobility Week : Carsharing, bicycles and new crossroads at Olivia Business Centre

The time and ease of commuting to work is the most important aspect of employees’ satisfaction with their place of work. The Olivia Business Centre has been investing in facilitating access to its office buildings in the business district of Gdańsk Oliwa. Additionally, infrastructure for cyclists and carsharing services are being developed. Since 16 August the Olivia Business Centre can be reached from al. Grunwaldzka over a new junction.

It’s good to live in Gdańsk Oliwa

Oliwa is one of the most important districts of the Tricity for the development of the metropolis. The Gdańsk University Campus, shopping centres and lots of newly built apartments. The district is also well communicated. One can reach Oliwa using SKM (Fast City Train, which is Tricity’s overgrund metro), PKM (Pomeranian Metropolitan Train), tram, bus. Is you use a car you will use the Tricity’s main highway: Grunwaldzka Avenue.

– “Living in the city centre has many advantages. The location is specifically popular among young people who are interested in easy commuting not only to work but also in easy access, e.g. to cinemas and shopping centres. Last year the prices of apartments in Oliwa grew by about 2.5%. We anticipate the upward trend to continue in the years to come, primarily due to the proximity of the developing office centres and the Gdańsk University Campus. Apartments in the area are often bought for investment purposes that is for rental. This has been noticed by various developers who have been building thousands of apartments in Oliwa and the adjacent districts,” says Krzysztof Płachta, property appraiser.

BikesThe site where the Olivia Business Centre is located is the best communicated site in Oliwa. Comfortable access is one of the reasons why the famous Hala Olivia is there. As can be found in a report made for the British Council for Offices (BCO) by the international consulting company Savills, the commuting time to the place of work does have impact on employees’ satisfaction with their work. Over 50% of the questioned people, of which 65% are people aged 25-34, referred to the city centre as the best place to work.

Working in the centre has the advantage of a short commuting time to the offices, which, according to the report for BCO, proved to be the most important aspect for as many as 86% of the respondents.
